Bandwidth

circleBandwidth is a representation of your connection speed. You typically see it as Kbps or Mbps. These stand for kilobits per second and megabits per second respectively. Similar to miles per hour these measure the amount of data that is able to flow through your connect in one second. A megabit is roughly 1,000 times the size of a kilobit. (1,024 to be exact).

circleTypical bandwidth measurements you will see are 128 Kbps, 256 Kbps, 512 Kbps, 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps, 4 Mbps, 8 Mbps, etc... Notice that when we pass from 512 Kbps to 1 Mbps we change how we notate the speed. 1024 Kbps would also be 1 Mbps.

1) Maximum information rate (MIR) refers to the maximum bandwidth that the VSAT subscriber will receive.

2) Committed Information Rate (CIR) is the speed that a user will experience if all subscribers who share the bandwidth simultaneously use the data connection. This promises a minimum speed, but it will be higher if the maximum number of subscribers does not use the bandwidth.

Kinds of Satellite Bandwidth

circleL-Band : 1 ~ 2GHz

1) Mobile Satellite Services (MSS). INMARISAT Fleet Broadband or Iridium Certus.

2) Based on a wide beam, so less pointing accuracy is needed to receive a strong signal. This means on board equipment can be smaller and lower cost.

circleC-Band : 4 ~ 8CHz

1) Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT). HTS(High Throughput Satellite).

2) Requires more power so larger (2.4m+), more expensive antennas are needed but bandwidth is relatively cost-effective.

circleKu-Band : 12 ~ 18CHz

1) Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT). HTS(High Throughput Satellite).

2) The most common maritime VSAT band in use, Ku-band satellite coverage has grown along the commercial trading routes making it a global VSAT alternative to C-band for merchant vessels.

circleKa-Band : 26.5 ~ 40CHz

1) Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT). INMARISAT GX.

2) A very large frequency range so there is more available spectrum, making it the least costly of all four bands in terms of satellite ‘airtime’.
